Bhawana Kanth becomes 2nd Indian woman to fly fighter aircraft solo

  • Flying officer Bhawana Kanth on Friday became the second woman pilot of the Indian Air Force (IAF) to fly a fighter aircraft solo, reported news agency ANI.
  • Kanth flew a MiG-21 “Bison” from Ambala Air Force Station at around 2pm on Saturday.

US is India’s 2nd biggest arms supplier 

  • The US is rapidly increasing its arms sales to India, emerging over the last five years as its second biggest supplier by providing 15 percent of its weapons imports, a study by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said. 
  • Washington increased its sales by more than five times compared to the previous five years, the authoritative SIPRI said in its report released this week. 

Maharashtra generates most bio-medical waste in India

  • Maharashtra tops the list of biomedical waste generated in the country daily, according to a document submitted by the ministry of health and family welfare in the Lok Sabha on Friday.
  • According to the state-wise report, Maharashtra generated 53,385kg a day in 2014, which increased to 62,740kg a day in 2015 and further to 71,511kg in 2016.
  • Second on the list is Karnataka (at 66,468kg a day), followed by Tamil Nadu (40,552kg a day) and Kerala (37,773kg a day).
  • Goa, Karnataka and West Bengal are among the states that have seen a steady decline in the figures over the past three years.

Sony India appoints of Sunil Nayyar as MD

  • Sony India on Monday announced the appointment of Sunil Nayyar as its Managing Director (MD) in place of Kenichiro Hibi, who will move to head the Japanese consumer electronics giant’s operations in Brazil, from April 1.
  • Hibi, who was MD of Sony India from 2012 till 2018, has now been appointed as President for Sony Brazil, effective April 1, 2018.

  • Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper 56 runs from 42-ball helped India beat Bangladesh by four wickets to win the Nidahas Trophy T20 tri-nation series in Colombo on Sunday.
  • Needing five off the final delivery, Karthik smashed Soumya Sarkar over extra-cover as a second-string Indian side held its nerve in a tense situation to chase down a target of 167 in 20 overs.

Winter Paralympics closes with tributes to Hawking

  • The Pyeongchang Winter Paralympics closed on Sunday with a dazzling ceremony featuring light shows, dancing and music, as well as tributes to late wheelchair-bound British physicist Stephen Hawking as an “inspiration”.
  • Nine days of sporting action ended with a flurry of events, including victory for the U.S. in a hard-fought sledge hockey final, helping them to top the medals table with 36 overall.

Sunil Chhetri named ‘Hero’ of Indian Super League, Ferran Corominas wins Golden Boot

  • Bengaluru FC skipper Sunil Chhetri was named the ‘Hero’ of Indian Super League’s fourth edition for his leadership and goal-scoring prowess.
  • Chennaiyin FC triumphed with a 3-2 victory over Bengaluru FC in the title clash.
  • He is the highest Indian scorer with 14 goals and third in the overall list behind Golden Boot winner Ferran Corominas (18) of FC Goa and his teammate Miku (15).

Vladimir Putin easily wins another six-year term, firms grip on Russia

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin won a landslide re-election victory on Sunday, extending his rule over the world’s largest country for another six years at a time when his ties with the West are on a hostile trajectory.
  • Putin’s thumping victory will extend his total time in office to nearly a quarter of a century, until 2024, by which time he will be 71. 

UN launches $951 million appeal for Rohingya refugees

  • United Nations agencies and NGO partners on Friday released a 2018 Joint Response Plan for the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis, with a $951 million appeal to meet the urgent needs of nearly 900,000 Rohingya refugees.

Bhutan among four nations recommended for graduation from UN’s least developed country

  • Bhutan, Kiribati, Sao Tome and Principe and Solomon Islands are set to move up from the ranks of poorest nations due to their increasing national earning power as well as access to better health care and education, a UN committee said.
  • The four countries will be recommended for graduation from the least developed country (LDC) category, the United Nations Committee for Development Policy (CDP) announced.

  • Swiggy on Monday said that it would introduce a new digital payments system to make funds transfer easier for its delivery fleet.

  • After Facebook and Google, Twitter was now likely to ban cryptocurrency, token sales and Initial Coin Offerings (ICO) advertisements on its platform.
